Xabi Alonso Embroiled in tax evasion scandal
According to the Daily Mail, prosecutor Jose Javier Polo told The Associated Press he requested a judge to look into the Bayern Munich player after his office found 'evidence' pointing to Alonso having defrauded Spain's tax office of £2.6m from 2009-11.
The judge will now decide whether or not to open proceedings against the 34-year-old who has denied any wrongdoing in the case.
Alonso posted an in-depth statement on his personal Facebook page stating that he "has always complied and will continue to comply with each and every of his fiscal obligations" continuing to distant himself from the case."
Xabi Alonso would not be the first player in Spain to be caught up in tax scandals, with high profile names such as Lionel Messi also embroiled in tax misconduct.
Earlier in the year, former teammate and Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano was sentenced to jail for tax avoidance, although he wont be serving any time inside.
